There was always something unusual about John McAfee. The tech entrepreneur made a fortune from the antivirus software that bears his name, but he also spent years as a cocaine addict, spiritual guru and yoga expert. In 2009, after losing millions in the stock market crash, he decided to retire to the tiny Central American nation of Belize. That's when things really got weird. He started hanging out with killers, prostitutes, and pimps. He fell in love with a 17-year-old and surrounded his tropical compound with armed guards. In November 2012 his neighbor was found murdered. McAfee, who professed his innocence, fled the police and went into hiding.

WIRED's Joshua Davis had months of exclusive access to McAfee before his disappearance and was virtually the only journalist McAfee had contact with when he went on the lam. In this fascinating profile, Davis takes readers into McAfee's heart of darkness, a harrowing and jaw-dropping tale of ambition, paranoia, sex, and madness.

So far, the reviews seem right on point. This is a very interesting read and well worth the $0.99 that it is selling for. It is a fascinating breaking story that keeps the reader engaged. It is well written and provides some very candid insights into the recent life of John McAfee. However, as others have noted, it is very short -- more like an extended article than a book -- I finished it in about 45 minutes and I think I read at a pretty average speed. It also leaves you hanging because the story is still very much in progress. I was shocked to find when I read the book, the closing accounts were less than a week old...talk about hot off the press.

I am not sure how this "breaking news" kindle book format will work on in the long run. I am willing to pay for great coverage of current events (which this books qualifies as), but it certainly has a short shelf life. If I bought this book after a major development occurred in the McAfee story, I would be disappointed.

Final thoughts: It is worth the money for a great story, but it has the feel of something rushed to press in order to scoop other writers.

John McAfee Last Stand Single eBook Joshua Davis Reviews

Great read - great story telling. Hard to believe that this tale of a modern day Mr. Kurtz is real - but every menacing detail makes the case that Mr. McAfee is very much trapped in his own creepy Heart of Darkness. I was totally drawn in from the first description of McAfee's craziness through the bizarre scenes that Joshua Davis paints with the perfect amount of detachment, curiosity and suspicion.

I love how Davis seemed to get into McAfee's head -- and helped me understand the intense overwhelm and constant anxiety this crazy man feels. I found myself alternating between feeling repulsion at this wrecked, evil guy, to (weirdly) feeling sorry for him. Since I was following the breaking news story on CNN, getting the full story was fascinating. For those of us reading from a comfortable couch, the story revealed the intense, outrageous and depressing stuff going on out there just beyond the white sandy beaches. Certainly every time I start up my computer and see the little McAfee icon letting me know that my laptop is safe from danger, I'll wonder how much danger McAfee is actually creating and how much danger he's in.
Book is very short but interesting, you get background in John McAfee life and see that he is a master at communication and manipulation of media, but as you probably got here in pursuit of current John Mcafee adventure in Belize you will be left dry. There is no end, this is only a background story on his life, for continuation of story you have McAfee blog, and sincerely this book will give you insight on McAfee and how he uses media, and from that point it is good and you will discover that McAfee is not to be trusted with everything he has to say.
I really enjoyed the article in Wired a while back and decided to get this to learn more about his story and motivation. It reads a bit too much like a slightly extended magazine article, not a short story. It's still worth the read if you haven't read the article, but don't expect a ton of new content if you have.
Interesting and scary. Would make a great movie. Hopefully there will be a follow up at some point because there is more story to tell.
I'm not a fan of McAfee's security software at all, but I never harbored anything against John McAfee himself. When I saw he was wanted for questioning in a murder case, I wanted to know more. Especially after the 'drugs' and 'prostitutes' allegations began filtering through the mainstream media. Wired presents a very neutral and honest case that both makes you want to cheer for, and condemn, this man. His life is interesting- whether you're "for" or "against" him (though he has since been arrested, thanks to sloppy EXIF tag purging), it is definitely interesting and reads more like a crime thriller or action movie than real life.
My best girlfriend actually worked for McAfee for a short time about six or seven years ago, staying in his beautiful house in Tucson, AZ as the live-in housekeeper. None of the stories written about him mention the Tucson stay - and he was here quite awhile - but nothing about his behavior then would have indicated what was to come, I can tell ya that. I thought this was an excellent read and, at the end, I wished there had been more! Davis does a great job capturing - and then blending - the creepiness, the humor, the urgency, the downfall, and even the bittersweet of the story, making it all work. The characters, the scenery, the off-the-wall thought process of the leading cast ....all of it was crisp and clear and extremely fun to read. I particularly enjoyed the interaction between McAfee and that crazy young girlfriend and found myself wishing there had been more written about that....but then reminded myself that this was non-fiction and that you can't make this stuff up! Even if you could, I doubt I'd be as much fun. A real page turner. My only complaint was that I wished it was longer!
A presumably factual rambling account of the rise and fall of John McAfee. An interesting early mover in the technology industry. What's left entirely unclear is whether or not in addition to his psychoses and drug abuse, was he also a capable technologist or just a huckster.

I think I would've enjoyed this much more if it included some interviews or input from other software developers who worked closely with him.

If nothing else it will leave you with some comfort that money is not everything and indeed not even a reasonable guarantee of happiness.
