I almost quit reading when Goldie left her pink bedroom and came downstairs in her SpongeBob pajamas and pink slippers. My gosh, I wondered, is she like 6 years old??? I'm not sure exactly how old she was, but she was old enough to be left on her own without Child Protective Services coming in. Throughout the book, I had to keep reminding myself that she had to be at least 18; she acted much, much younger.Left alone after her Grandfather dies, Goldie is cast adrift, with nowhere to go and nothing to do. Which made me think her Grandfather was extremely selfish, not to prepare her better for life. Goldie had never held even a part-time job, never been enouraged to go to college or even take vocational courses. Graddad kept her a dependant child, all her life.
At one point, she decides to go to the same Bible study group her grandfather went to, for senior citizens. The members close her out, won't even let her in the house, "for her own good", as they believe she should get involved with people her own age. Wow. I hope I never get involved with a church with such callous members. This isn't "tough love", as I think the author meant it to be, it was cruelty. They didn't try to help Goldie with her grief and loneliness, didn't offer to help her find people her own age, didn't encourage her and support her when she so obviously needed help--they just literally slammed the door in her face. Thanks, but if that's Christianity, I'd rather join the atheists.
The only person who took an interest in her and her well-being was Joe, from the coffee shop, a Christian, but not from Goldie's church. She begins to attend the beach-side services with him, and there finds the love, support and encouragement that she needs.
And what happens when Goldie is a stronger, more self-reliant person? The members of the senior citizen Bible Study welcome her back. Now that she's no bother to them and doesn't need anything from them, they open their arms to her. Mighty nice of 'em. Yeesh.

"From Long and Short Romance Reviews Author Teri Wilson had me from "Blast you Sponge Bob, blast you and your square pants, too!"
She has also written a delightful romance with an inspirational subplot. CUP OF JOE will have you pondering life and love long before you finish the book.
Goldie has surrounded herself with older people most of her life. Aching with the loss of her beloved grandfather (and unable to get out of her Sponge Bob pajamas and face the world), Goldie just can't figure out why Joe the Coffee Guy keeps bringing her coffee from his coffee shop every morning. Then he brings her a puppy.
One of the most interesting aspects of this story for me was the undiluted character of Joe, our young hero smitten with an old friend's granddaughter. His determination to win Goldie's heart, and his commitment to take it slow, makes him very unique in the genre of romance. His tenderness for Goldie made me want to meet him. His love and respect for every living thing around him made me want to date him.
Goldie is a struggling heroine who hasn't lost her sense of humor. Her tongue-in-cheek sarcasm for game shows, casseroles and even feelings of the heart, make Goldie a three-dimensional chuckle a chapter. Goldie is universal in her experiences, her fears, and even in her courage. I liked this young woman. I'd hang out with her in my pajama pants.
As the couple conquers a doggy obedience class together, their trust and affection grow and the reader is permitted peeks into the hearts of both characters. The story is a perfect example of when more than one point of view really works for a romance. The inspirational subplot is delicate and sincere, but not preachy. Joe even adores his sassy cashier with the body piercings, and so will you.
CUP OF JOE reads easily, is sweet and entertaining, and is just as relaxing as say, a cup of joe. Unique characters. Unique storylines. Unique writing. As far as the Inspirational genre is concerned, Ms. Wilson has the recipe.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was that in places it seemed to be a little "too simple" and maybe a bit juvenile. In other parts, the author seemed to have some good insights. It was a sweet love story told in a gentle fashion. I think that women of any age could enjoy the read although it would probably appeal more to the younger reader. I am a dog lover and this was also an aspect of the book that made the read enjoyable to me. Although the story was a bit predictable with no surprises, sometimes a sweet read is what your mood calls for!
Goldie Jensen's grandfather just died and a lot of coffee cups have been showing up. She is still dealing with grief over his death and Joe Montgomery keeps showing up. She calls him the coffee man as he has a coffee shop named Joe's.
Joe has decided to talk to her and they slowly get to know each other. After hearing that Goldie does not like coffee he asks his assistant to help change that. It turns out that she makes up a Carmel flavored coffee that Goldie actually likes it.
Soon it's time for her grandfather's funeral. Joe helps her deal with feeling upset and gives her a dog, Bliss, for a get well present. She also meets his dog Java and they let their dogs be around each other and walk them. This leads to doggy school where it's decided that Bliss would be great for competition.
Eventually these two find that they just might have a connection that is well worth taking to the next level.
I liked this story because of the characterizations of Joe, Goldie and her friends. The general good vibes given off were sweet and a pleasure to read. I enjoyed all the thoughtfulness and sweetness. This title had me craving flavored coffee as it all sounded so good. The dogs also added depth and were cute. If your seeking a sweet, cute and fun read check this unforgettable title out. Teri Wilson knows how to create a slow sweet relationship that is just so believable.
